Percussion Meets the Chinese Guzheng 第十届“华乐筝鸣”年度音乐会圆满成功
On the evening of the 22nd of November 2025, Zheng’s Music Studio successfully presented their 10th Annual Guzheng Concert at Q Theatre, Auckland. This year’s theme, Percussion Meets the Chinese Guzheng, showcased the unique charm of cross-disciplinary collaboration, presenting an immersive musical feast that bridged tradition and modernity, and connected Eastern and Western musical cultures.
A decade of guzheng sound began in 2016 with Rhythm of the Guzheng, and over nine years and nine editions, each concert has flourished step by step. On this 10th anniversary milestone, the studio embraced a more open approach to collaboration and a broader artistic vision, expanding the possibilities of guzheng music. This decade represents both a heartfelt reflection on the preservation of tradition and a confident step toward the future.
The young performers on stage were members of Boya Guzheng, the most representative student performance group of Zheng’s Music Studio. The name ‘Boya’ symbolises scholarly refinement and musical elegance. With each string and note, they express both the essence of Eastern aesthetics and a contemporary artistic voice. With youthful passion and professional dedication, they have brought guzheng music into concert halls, libraries, and rest homes, and onto international digital stages, sharing the beauty of the instrument across New Zealand and the world.
They have been invited to perform on CCTV’s Together Across Five Continents: A Global Virtual Concert – The Sound of Music, and have also appeared at the New Zealand Parliament. In addition, they have performed at nearly 50 major events, including Mid-Autumn and National Day celebrations, Asian cultural festivals, harp festivals, and choral festivals. In libraries across Avondale, Pakuranga, and Devonport, they have held nearly 20 community concerts, bringing music to every corner of the city. Their video series Zheng’s Music Highlights has released over 100 episodes on YouTube, Bilibili, and WeChat Channels, continuously sharing the beauty of New Zealand guzheng music with the world. In 2020, they were also featured in People’s Daily, becoming a source of pride for guzheng promotion in New Zealand.
At this concert, the Boya Guzheng opened the first half of the programme with eight diverse works, forming a vivid musical tapestry:
Harvest Festival Drums and Gongs — joyful and uplifting
Butterfly Lovers — elegant and deeply emotional
Military Command — powerful and majestic
The Sound of Snowfall — delicate and poetic
Yao Ethnic Dance — rhythmic and colourful
Dragon Boat Racing — dynamic and energetic
Splendid National Music — grand and celebratory
Horse Racing — fast-paced and exuberant
From tenderness to grandeur, from lyricism to intensity, the eight works unfolded like a series of musical paintings. With solid technique and sincere stage presence, the students fully demonstrated the richness and colour of guzheng ensemble performance. This was not only an expression of youth, but also a reflection of ten years of accumulation and artistic heritage within Zheng’s Music Studio.
Cross-Cultural Resonance
The second half of the concert featured a collaboration between Lin Zheng (University of Auckland Guzheng Artist Teacher) and Eric Renick (University of Auckland Percussion Artist Teacher, APO Principal Percussionist). Together, they performed Lin Zheng’s original cross-genre work Formless.
On stage, the gentle expressiveness of the guzheng met the dynamic power of Western percussion, intertwining to create a musical energy that transcended cultural boundaries. Layered rhythms and a sonic landscape that combined delicacy with grandeur formed a rich and multidimensional musical experience.
Through their remarkable synergy and expressive performance, the two musicians elevated the dialogue between contemporary guzheng and modern percussion to a new artistic level. This cross-cultural collaboration was not only an artistic exploration, but also a moment of emotional resonance, revealing the limitless possibilities of the guzheng in a contemporary context.
Gratitude and Acknowledgement
The success of every concert is made possible by the students’ dedication to practice, the quiet support of parents, the encouragement of audiences, and the tireless efforts of behind-the-scenes staff. It is through this shared trust and companionship that these concerts has taken root in New Zealand, grown steadily, and flourished with a unique and lasting artistic presence over the past decade.
Ten years is both a measure of reflection and a source of strength for the journey ahead. A decade of guzheng sound, unwavering in its original aspiration; a decade of shared journey, looking forward to the future together.
We thank everyone who has made the music more beautiful and the stage warmer. May we continue to walk side by side, so that the sound of the guzheng may be heard, felt, and remembered across this land and beyond. We look forward to our next gathering, where a new chapter will begin.
