New Lynn Library Performance 指筝朝夕 筝筝日上(十五)

On the 18th of May 2025, Zheng’s Music Studio was invited to participate in the ‘New Zealand Music Month’ series hosted by New Lynn Library. This event marked the fifteenth instalment of the ‘Guzheng Practice from Morning to Night, Steady Progress Every Day’ community outreach concert series. The performance aimed to showcase the fusion and continuity of diverse cultures through live traditional instrumental music, offering the local community a unique and engaging audiovisual experience.

The performance was presented by members of Boya Guzheng. With refined technique and great enthusiasm, they performed ten guzheng pieces of varied styles, including: Yu Meiren, Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix, Thirty-Three Beats, Embroidered Golden Plaque, Harvest Festival Drums and Gongs, Yao Ethnic Dance, Battling the Typhoon, East Sea Fisherman’s Song, Dance of the Golden Snake, and A Laugh in the Vast Sea. The repertoire ranged from the delicate and lyrical elegance of Jiangnan silk-and-bamboo traditions, to the bold and expressive character of northern folk music, as well as the grand and festive spirit of celebratory works—fully demonstrating the rich expressive power and contemporary vitality of guzheng music.

Throughout the performance, the sound of the guzheng shifted between graceful subtlety and powerful intensity, deeply moving the audience. Many attendees remarked that it was their first time experiencing the unique charm of traditional Chinese instruments up close. Audience members eagerly came forward to interact with the performers, creating an atmosphere filled with warmth, cultural connection, and joy.

Zheng’s Music Studio remains dedicated to promoting traditional Chinese music in New Zealand, actively engaging in community events and supporting the local dissemination and appreciation of the guzheng. This appearance at New Lynn Library also brought a distinctive Eastern musical voice to New Zealand Music Month.

Following the performance, a certificate presentation ceremony was held for students who had successfully passed the graded examinations of the Chinese Nationalities Orchestra Society. The students demonstrated their progress through performance and received encouragement and recognition during the event. Congratulations to the members of the Boya Guzheng Ensemble on their excellent achievements, and best wishes as they continue forward on their musical journey.
